Questionnaire Results

Below are the results of the questionnaire and what i found out from them.

Firstly, their favourite genres, there being quite a range of different styles and also, people find it hard to pin point a favourite genre unlike a least favourite where people would generally suggest one or someone specific. The most common would be Indie or Rock where as the least favourite genre would be Pop with it said 3 times but, also 4 pop artists were mentioned. People stated the reason they disliked Pop was it, relied on auto tune too much, was disconnected from the audience, the lack of meaning etc.

With their favourite artists, they are linked to their favourite genre but yet again, people found it hard to determine one favourite artist when they listen to such a big variety.

With there being a wide range of different interests, it also led to there being a range of favourite elements in music videos, these include:
  • having a twist,
  • focusing on the performer,
  •  having a story line like a short film,
  • entertaining,
  • creativity,
  • colour,
  • visuals match the lyrics,
  • if its relatable to the viewer,
  • special effects,
  • performance
  • comedy.
By having this list, it helps see what people look for in a music video, we could use this as a general checklist when going over our video, asking ourselves if our video incorporates as much of these as possible, does it involve creativity, colour, comedy etc.

Most people kept up to date with music through social media sites such as Youtube, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram etc, but also by music channels. This shows that you would need to have a good marketing scheme to get a good fan base, word of mouth comes in to play for this. The main source that was suggested by the majority was Youtube

Why do people watch videos? the general idea was the new meaning behind a video, as they may have interpreted the lyrics in a different way to how the artist wants to, but also, people watch them because they are entertaining to watch and like to see the creativity.

Below is a list of music videos that were mentioned, here, i noticed that the most of the time the music video did not link to what they answered before hand, being that it is a different artist and genre, giving the impression that people judge purely on the video itself.

Everyone has a different idea on how to tell if a video is effective, The results were:
  • They come back to the video
  • Compliments the lyrics
  • If they are paying attention
  • If it compliments it, and if not, how well it does
  • if you listen to the song and you think of the video
  • the video portrays the video accurately
  • tells the story of the lyrics
  • if its entertaining
  • iconic
  • it makes sense
  • if you remember it or not
And finally most people stated that having a music video doesn't influence their favourite song but see it as a bonus. 5 out of 11 said no, but was a bonus, 4 people said yes and 2 said sometimes.
